Introduction
Exp in Harem collector given at the end of battle is split between all members (dead members still receive their share). Effectively this means that using hero alone grants up to 4 times the intended exp and can easily break the game with regard to how strong your character is supposed to be. As an aside, if the exp cannot be split correctly, the game seems to round down, effectively meaning that you lose 1 more exp on certain battles.
Note: As of the March 2015 version 3 release, experience given will always be the same regardless of how many party members you have, causing soloing to have no practical use.
Practical usage
Since I'm pursuing this train of logic from a theoretical standpoint moreso than a practical one, it is necessary to inform the average player of the use of such information. First off, party members join the party at Hero's level -1, to reduce the amount of exp lost, it's better to get them at low levels and immediately after you've gained a level. There's 2 ways to manipulate exp outside of dungeons, lore bonuses and the enemies on Giant's path. The question then becomes when should these limited resources be used to maximise their gain? Aside from this question, there's very little "real" value to the information here aside from obtaining a "theoretical" maximum level given the current amount of content. Those looking for more gameplay strategies may want to look elsewhere. I will try to cover strategies of how to handle hidden bosses with that I consider to be the least number of allies or the lowest level I would even consider challenging them.
Useful information for soloing
Solo Preparation
While soloing can provide a great experience boost, it can be rather difficult to pull off immediately since this is not how the game was intended to be played. As such players are advised to before they go off doing any fights to do a few different things to help power up the hero as to make soloing much easier. Note that all of the below suggestions will not make use of certain name/code bonuses, will not require any fights to acquire, and will not involve ending the day. This section is designed to not have any significant impact on the game beyond preparing players to solo as there exist several other guides for the rest of the game.
- Players should on day one spend the 5 satisfaction they begin with to learn the skill 'encourage'. It allows the hero to heal himself which makes a huge difference in solo capabilities, as well as also giving him a defense boost that also makes a huge difference.
- Equipment:
- Players can dig up a couple of useful pieces of equipment for the cheap price of 50 sil (which taking out a loan will allow players to do), these include a Knight Helm next to your manor (18 defense headgear) and a Fortified Cloak in southport (5 resist accessory that reduces damage received from force magic)
- In Eastfort players who have at least 500 sil (must be gotten through the loan if players wish to avoid fighting currently) can acquire some nice iron armor (16 defense body armor) in the Pusher's Lament quest (be aware all loot in the barracks is missable) along with 543 sil back (another 160 can be acquired on the second floor cave in the giant's path allowing players to pay off their loan exactly with a slight profit)
- South of Eastfort players may encounter an old man and a wandering skeleton, if players examines the pile of bones one of them will give a lucky hat which most notably gives 20 luck (4 points of luck gives you the same as 1 point of attack along with any other bonuses, so this hat effectively gives 5 attack if nothing else)
- Stat boosting items:
- Players can also dig up a Willis' Distilled Tonic in the slums (+3 defense)
- If you visit the monument (along the Northmarket/Eastfort road on west side of the bridge), check any monument then talk to the old lady for Jackson's Sweet-Ass Unguent (+3 atk)
- Finally if players obtain 5 dark seeds they can trade them in for a potion of the beast (+100 HP, +3 attack, defense, and agility). Several dark seeds that are available to players in the beginning:
- On the first floor of your manor, in the back area, take the left stairs down and open the chest there (This one is missable)
- On the world map follow the path between North market and Eastfort, enter the first farm directly next to this path (not the ones near Northmarket) and talk to the well here (this one is missable)
- After bribing the guards in Eastfort make sure that you loot ALL the chests, as one of them contains a dark seed (this one is missable)
- From Northmarket follow the road to the Northeast, you should encounter someone who gives you a dark seed. You can also go from Lumberhill and follow the road Southwest to Northmarket.
- In Northmarket wealthy district, near the church are several graves. Dig the southern most grave that has a path of dirt in front of it.
- In Southport academy district, in about the center of the map is a big building with no sign in front of it, this is the townhouse. Enter it and go to the second floor, enter the closest room here and talk to the candles in the following order: North, Southwest, East, West, Southeast to get a chest containing a dark seed to appear
- In Huntervale (to the Northeast of Southport, follow the road North until you can head East) enter the first cabin to the West of the well and open the chest inside.
For a more organized list to acquire all of these along with the missable items, here is how you should proceed once the day starts.
- Get Encourage from your satisfaction menu and Pick up the Dark Seed in your cistern.
- Get a loan (actually certain combinations of fixed encounters should work. I prefer loan as it's a good deal anyway)
- Buy a shovel and dig up the following spots(link for those unfamiliar with the spots):-
- Northmarket Slums for Willis' Distilled Tonic (+3 Def)
- Northmarket Wealthy Area for a Darkseed
- Northmarket Wealthy Area for a Knight Helm
- Southport for a Fortified Cloak
- Pick up the Darkseed from Penelope's well (distant farm)
- Visit the monument, check any monument then talk to the old lady for Jackson's Sweet-Ass Unguent (+3 atk)
- Talk to the drug dealer in EastFort and agree to help. Bribe the guards to get into the officer's barracks and loot it making sure to pick up the iron armor and the dark seed. (optional) pick up the fursuit from the lowest left room's bed.
- Find the Random Encounter south of EastFort and pick up the Lucky Hat from the skeleton.
- Start heading back to Northmarket, making sure that after crossing the river you take the Northern road back. Get the Darkseed from the random encounter near the buried city on your way to the slums.
- Turn in 5 Darkseeds for a Potion of the Dark Beast (Various stats up)
This gives you the most combat stats possible at the very beginning of the game. I personally suggest focusing on armor at this point because Hero gaining more exp means getting tankier faster than usual. The following is an exp chart up till level 30.
EXP Chart
Level | to next | total | Level | to next | total | Level | to next | total |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Level 1 | 30 | 0 | Level 11 | 1370 | 4646 | Level 21 | 4459 | 31374 |

Level 10 | 1146 | 3500 | Level 20 | 4171 | 27203 | Level 30 | 87711 |
This chart can be extremely useful when it comes to recruiting new party members, since as stated before they will be one level below you (at the lowest experience needed for that level) you can figure out when it's 'profitable' to gain a level before you recruit a character instead of afterwards. For example, a level 2 Hero will gain characters at level 1, so if you it takes 29 experience to gain a level, going out and gaining exactly 29 experience before recruiting a character will give a net profit of one experience (though given the limited sources of experience in the world, a profit of one point probably isn't worth it). This chart can be very useful if you're say level 12, so you don't remember how much experience a party member will gain if you get to 13 before recruiting them, you just look up the 'to next' column next to 11 to find out that as long as it takes less than 1,370 experience to gain another level, doing such before recruiting someone yields more total experience throughout the party.
Though since the sources of experience which you can choose to take or not to take are limited, it would be a good idea for players to consider if the experience profit is worth it since you'll no longer have the ability to use those experience sources for future party members, though since as you gain levels you begin to need upwards of thousands of experience points, these sources of experience become less and less likely to make a difference as you gain levels. Different players will value the level of different party members more or less, but figuring out base profitability in terms of experience and recruitment are a very good starting point for any optimized play through.
Abusable mechanics
Blue Dragon Ring allows you to use items that would normally turn you drunk with no penalties. There's maybe 4 useful options to come out of this:
- Several brews (Plain Old Brew at Adventurer Guilds, Tin Dog Brew at Northmarket slum pub and Appletini after investing in Northmarket slum pub) bestow the HP Regen status restoring 10% health per turn for a while. Also possible to use it prior to hard battles for a small boost to survivability early on. Appletini has the highest chance of proccing that status.
- Removing Poison using Fauster's Brew ("It came from below the Equator" quest only), this one has very limited application you can use it as a "Potion of Resist Poison" essentially (without the damage reduction) if you use it this way.
- Similar to above, you can use Cryobrew (invested Southport pub) for Ice resistance.
- Arguably the most important use of this setup is being able to take advantage of the Momentum restoration. The highest non-drunk status momentum recovery is Jar of Honey (one of the farms) with 25 Momentum restored. Cyrobrew(invested Southport Pub) gives 33 Momentum and Power Brew (invested Eastfort pub) gives a whopping 50 Momentum! Mind this means being forced to equip the ring in combat but given it's defensive stats, it's still useful.
The main hero can actually equip shields? Remove his weapon and he can instead use light shields for higher defense. (150 for 3 defense early on, 4500 for 10 defense after getting to Squire).
Controllable sources of exp
There's 3 subsections in here, Fixed encounters which can be accessed outside of quests. Lore exp (these are primarily books) and finally daily quests where you can reset (prior to ending the day) for maximum exp gain.

Note: There's additional enemies in Giant's Path during a quest. I'll cover that later on. These enemies are available throughout the game (even during that quest.)

Daily Quest
The linked page has full information on what possible results can be obtained. For the purposes of max exp, pre level 8, it's best to stick to slimes, and then swap over to Kellos soldiers. Your own mileage may vary as Kellos soldiers have a oneshot ability that works frequently. As for how to manipulate the daily quest, saving before the day ends and reloading works best. Since this is often linked to certain (difficult) boss fights, it may be a hassle to save/reload until you get what you want though.
Exp from quests
On to the meat and bones. This'll probably be split into quest by quest(and hence dungeon by dungeon) because it's the only easy way to group enemies together. Almost every quest contains only one dungeon that must be started and completed in one run. The exceptions are dealt with on a case by case basis.

Simple quest with very nice exp rewards (and better weapons!) Focus on magical users(imps) first during the dungeon, physical damage is negligible. Epsilon heals and has low health, Elvo should be next due to magic damage, Beta barely does damage. Very easy fight at low levels.
- Note: Due to the Venom imps, it is advised that players do not solo this quest unless they have improved encourage or bring in a few cleansers as there is only one cleanser in the dungeon, so without preparation you can only cure poison once before finishing the dungeon.

Surprisingly low exp. Clever cultists can poison, since there's only one instance of them, there's no need to carry more than one cleanser. To avoid the battle in the switches room, bribe Borgen for the key to the chest, get the spot remover, get the comic, get rid of the guard then check the prop room for a crowbar (only possible to pickup once the guard is gone), use it on office door. Chthonic creature acts as a support monster and is immune to most status effects (including Gargan's stun). Boss battle is a slugfest that relies on physical attacks, it's resistant to all forms of magic except Radiant. Probably best to just fight it out using normal attacks+encourage though.

Splitting this off into 2 since you can do other things prior to tackling the woods. High hitpoints on everything here, just a slugfest though essentially. Remember to get a free blessing from the priest prior to talking to the mayor when starting the "dungeon". As a tangent, the inn doesn't provide much use so feel free to allow it to be destroyed so you can pick up 2 chests with 1,500 each at the expense of minor gold and 66 exp. It should be the third zombie from the upper left corner of town.

You'll need to be high level to solo this area and have Nail Bombs from the Amazing Old Man. Blessing is very helpful throughout the dungeon. Telekinetic Spooks deal magic based Force damage that have close to 100% chance of knockdown. For accessories, I suggest Foxhead Medallion due to this and the boss (Spectre does Force/Ice, Necromanceress does Necrotic) or Fortified Cloak. As for the boss strategy, throw nailbombs, hope most of them hit Spectre. Spectre has between 1-1.5k hitpoints and should go down in 4-5 nailbomb explosions hit it. After that just use Encourage to survive the damage and wait for Necromanceress' mp to run out. If you don't have Nail Bombs, toss the Demon Dice and rely on Pyro Brew instead. If you want to take a risky gamble, try Scrolls of Lightning (paralysis) or Scrolls of Stormroar(deafened), both can work but I found Nailbombs to be a more effective method of getting through the battle.
- Because Nail Bombs require 5 days which is a fair investment of Satisfaction early on, you can also get 5 nailbombs by doing manor assault with the Amazing Old Man active, you lose 84 points of experience though.
Alternative strategy- If you manage to get to the boss with the free blessing (must be acquired before the zombie attack) which is very much possible (though you'll probably want to be familiar with how to get to the boss first to avoid wasting steps) a critical hit on the first turn will one-hit the spectre (if you don't get it it will still fall in 2-3 hits so as long as you're not unlucky normal attacks will do just fine for taking him down), from there just normal attack the Necromancess and use improved encourage on yourself, if she attacks every turn instead of using mana drain, two attacks and then encourage tends to be a good balance of SP and health. Once she's down taking care of the meat-shields should be no problem since between blessing and encourage they should do almost no damage if any. This is possible even with just the cloak of fortitude or resistance, knight helm, and iron armor even if you make sure to keep blessing.

This whole section is interesting because there's multiple variables that go into determining what the "best" exp distribution is. The "best" possible exp distribution is probably Florine, Ino, Penelope, Serade, Violet, Lilac, Alina(if she counts, Randi if she doesn't.) It probably isn't worth the effort of gambling so much for money though.

Kellosian Musketeers have the highest damage output and can randomly cause instant death. Always kill them off first. 3 Raccoon has an extra note as it behaves "differently" from all prior animal fights in that you cannot save it for later. Evanie spams physical attacks. Blue Dragon Ring effectively nullifies all her damage after one/two encourage boosts. Be sure to solo all enemies in the camp before saving Kyrie as she'll make you do it anyway and force herself into your party.
*You will have to fight at least one of the three missable fights as the path to avoid one encounter clashes with a different one.

Map names are a bit of an annoyance. They're numbered according to the order they're accessed.Seemed to be impossible to solo (legitly anyway, i'm sure enough daily quests will work) when I last tried it. Will try again after completing the guide. Even with a party, taking a tanker like Therese/Doll might be a smart idea as the damage from the larger groups can easily destroy the unwary player. Also, bring cleansers and/or ways to heal poison.

Placeholder for now. Although, that exp amount is insane.
- This quest probably can't be done in solo, some luck might be able to get you through the graveyard fights, and item spam might be able to get you past the werewolves, but the fetish dolls will absolutely destroy you with stuns, and beyond that you still have the invisible enemy who can only be rarely hit with physical attacks, not to mention the count fight... While proper item usage might be able to get you through this quest, it will probably come at an extremely high cost in terms of sil, Amazing Old man items, and especially time. Taking an experience cut is probably needed which is quite sad given all that beautiful experience....

Kellos Slaves can instakill. Bandit Slaves can poison. Pyrobrews are pretty effective on Ice/Winter nymphs. Use Cyrobrews+Blue Dragon Ring to reduce damage from Ice/Winter Nymphs. Note that currently these observations are based on a lvl99 party via switch run. A more proper strategy to be provided once I'm not lazy and actually start playing the game properly again.
Love quests
There's always at least one other party member forced in these quests. Also, because you have two party members, consider that the option to cheap out bosses by relying on Alien Lifeform for stunlock is always possible.

Bit too high level to give decent strategies for this. Damage taken was too low for me to think of anything....
- Note: It's been stated elsewhere on the wiki (quest page) that giving Elaiya having the 'sneak' status helps with her solo fight. Might be worth testing sometime using the timetuner to try to get this encounter at lower levels to try to make strategies.

Exp doesn't consider the infinity fight. Bring along Fire Resist Potions and a few Bottles of Instant Frost (Giant's Path). Consider wearing Fireproof Cloaks. As a reminder, note that you can actually use buffing potions prior to entering combat including Fire Resist potions. Primary damage here is from Elementalists, rely on Fire Resist potions when walking into the groups of 3 Elementalists. The Red Dragon itself isn't very damaging per hit but has multiple attacks per turn and could probably kill Meline in one round if it focuses on her. If it lifts off, it'll drop a powerful physical attack on the next turn, consider defending in that case. His Dragon Fire has a high chance of burning so try to keep Fire Resist up, it's based on magic so Guilt Tripping reduces the damage output further. Dragon has some minor defence against physical damage so use a Bottle of Instant Frost to actually deal damage using physical attacks.
- Note: I haven't personally solo'd this one. I took along a full party.

By the time this quest unlocked for me on all my playthroughs, my levels made the battles too easy. I'll need to start up a new playthrough and try it at like.. level 8 or something for more specific strategies. Dying removes all debuffs so you can try and let Hero die during the Baloth fight and revive him to heal his perma sleep.

A decent level is necessary to get the health for this dungeon. Blue Dragon Ring is pretty much a necessity to counter the hallucination status. Pyrobrews can be used to oneshot. Shamans/Queen have a good chance of inflicting poison, use resist poison potions to counter or rely on Scrolls of Stomroar for deafening. Aim to kill Shamans asap as their ability to poison and deal high damage is a problem. Consider using Resist Poison and Alchemic Fire potions prior to the 3 Mycon + Mycon Shaman fight as the damage in that fight can get overwhelming if you get unlucky with Pyro Brews and it takes a long time for the Shaman to die.
The queen herself is essentially an even stronger Mycon Shaman. None of the mycons are immune to Hallucinating and you can get 12 Hallucinogen Bombs that cause it at seemingly 100% rate from Amazing Oldman. Use a combination of Hallucinogen Bombs and Concussive Bombs to get rid of her Mycon Friends (Concussive Bombs have a chance of causing deafened which lowers Shaman/Queen damage output significantly), then just wear her down the same way you would Mycon Shamans just be extra careful as unlike most harder dungeons, Penelope's dungeon does not feature a save point hence losing a battle is a significantly larger risk than it normally is.
Hidden boss strategies
Corrupt Mycon
Corrupt Mycon is deals around 400-500 damage using the necrotic spells Void Orb and Bog Sickness, and inflicts poison using Touch of the Cobra (around 350 damage). His normal attacks hit for around 120-ish damage (up to 3 times) and can inflict hallucinations assuming no additional armor is bought. Finally on the 2nd turn and every 5 turns (i.e after 4 attacks), he uses Blessing of the Bone that deals ~= 900-1200 damage to himself. It can heal for around 300 health once his health starts getting low.
Your strategy once I mention Blessing of the bone should be obvious, outlast it to submission in a solo match. Defensively, the Blue Dragon ring is pretty much a necessity,Blessing(churches) reduces the damage by a noticeable amount as well. Poison doesn't seem to work so the only status you should be aiming for via weapon types is Burn and MAYBE Daze, which i like apply early on in the battle(i.e the first attack. Just reset if it doesn't proc) I usually go in with 2 potions of warding/barkskin active, potion of resist necrotic/poison and then use 3 of the 4 attack turns to make sure some of them STAY up. (one on encourage, one on warding, one on resist poison), this leaves you with 2 turns to attack/heal. Assuming you're not insane*, mid potions should be enough to keep you alive once you're level 11-ish. PyroBrew does about 400-500 damage, whereas normal Fire enhanced attacks deal about 100. What I did was use pyrobrews early on to try and knock it to a point where it would heal more then switched over to having all 4 buffs up whilst waiting for it to die.
Altogether my winning run at level 12 took about 22 Potions of Warding, 2 potions of barkskin, 21 potions of resist poison, 10 potions of Resist Necrotic, 10 Pyrobrews and 15-ish Mid potions.
I've managed to eke out a win at level 9. I was very lucky and never want to do that again. That run took something like 50 of all potions...
Rattus Maximus
First the stats: 120000 HP, with 5% Health regeneration per turn (means, it regains 6k HP each turn) Immunity to all insta-kill tricks (which is significant, since many regular bosses aren't immune - only bonus bosses are) 35% counter rate - roughly every third attack against it will be answered by an attack from it. +100% Crit evasion. Crit builds are going to have a hard time. 50% MDR and PDR - basically, magical and physical damage are halved. That's why Coup de Grace only halves his (current, always just current) HP - usually, it's an instant kill doing the enemy's full current HP in damage.
5% regen is easy to negate with any damage over time effect - they all do percentage damage. Which is actually probably the best idea to approach this, since "% of enemy's HP"-effects are more effective against high HP enemies such as this.
Also, it's basic stats are: Atk 135; Def 120; Mat 120; Mdf 125; Agi 225; Luk 225;
So, physical damage is *slightly* more effective then magical damage, I guess. And don't even try low-accuracy attacks - you need reliable high base damage with high hit rate.
First off, Gargan needs to be above level 21. Equip Hero and Gargan with as much pure defensive equipment as you can. Make sure that Gargan is using the Blue Dragon Ring. Pop 2 Barkskin potions, Alchemic Fire, Contact Poison (optional Bottle of Instant Frost) on both of them prior to entering combat. Turn one, Gargan Cape Stun, Hero Power Brew on Gargan. Turn 2, normal attack from hero until both status are procced, Gargan coup de Grace. Rinse and repeat until it dies. Healing as necessary. You don't really need to reuse defensive buffs in my experience as you can alternate Hero healing potion + Gargan Cape Stun when your hitpoints get low. Gargan's Coup de Grace will effectively half the rat's current hitpoints everytime it hits. Keep doing it until it's low enough to kill.
Long fight but it's not hard :D
Some other status effects which are useful include, Blindness(bottle of smoke from Adventure guilds), Hallucination(from Hallucinogen Bombs gotten from Amazing Old Man) and Bleed (from throwing knives, get Kevin's affection high enough),
